How Long Do Welsh Cakes Last?

Welsh Cakes are one of those magical bakes that somehow manage to taste homemade, nostalgic, and comforting — all at once. But once you’ve got your hands on a fresh batch (or maybe a few extra…), you might wonder:

How long do Welsh Cakes actually last?
Let’s break it down so you can savour every last crumb — safely and deliciously.

Shelf Life at Room Temperature

Fresh, homemade Welsh Cakes like ours will usually keep for:

Up to 5 days
When stored in an airtight container at room temperature.

They’re best enjoyed within the first 2–3 days, when they’re still soft and full of that freshly griddled texture. After that, they may start to feel a little drier — but they’re still totally edible (and can be revived — more on that below!).

Can You Freeze Welsh Cakes?

Yes — and they freeze beautifully!

To freeze:

  1. Let them cool completely.
  2. Stack with baking paper between layers (to avoid sticking).
  3. Pop in a freezer bag or airtight container.
  4. Label with the date.

They’ll keep for up to 3 months in the freezer.

To defrost, just leave them out at room temp for an hour or gently warm in a pan or toaster. They’ll be almost as good as the day they were made.

Reheating Tips (Optional but Lovely)

Want to bring that fresh-from-the-griddle warmth back?

  • Pop them in a dry frying pan for 30–60 seconds per side.
  • Use a toaster (on a low setting) if you’re careful.
  • Or warm in the oven at 160°C / 320°F for about 5 minutes.

They’ll come back to life with a soft centre and slightly crisp edges. Add a dab of butter or jam if you like — we won’t tell.

How Can You Tell If They’ve Gone Off?

Welsh Cakes are low in moisture, so they’re fairly forgiving. Still, here’s what to watch out for:

  • Dry and crumbly texture = past their best, but still safe
  • Visible mould or odd smell = time to say goodbye

Trust your senses — and when in doubt, don’t risk it.

Quick Tips for Storing Welsh Cakes

  • Keep in a tin or airtight container lined with parchment
  • Avoid storing in the fridge — it dries them out
  • Add a slice of apple (wrapped separately) inside the tin to help retain moisture (just like with cookies!)

At CwtchBakes, we always recommend enjoying them fresh — but if you need to stretch the joy a little longer, now you know how!
